WOW Day - A Spanish Fiesta

This half term, the topic is Spain. For WOW day, Copper Beech class had a Spanish Fiesta in the class. Children played Spanish music on the guitar, they tasted Spanish food, they created some fireworks using scratch art and face painted each other. Finally they learnt about Spanish flamenco dancing and bullfighting. A very enjoyable day!

Drama and music workshop

Children participated in a music and a drama workshop and learnt about the kingdom of Benin creatively. They made the Kingdom with their bodies. They did some drumming that originated from Nigeria, and sang some ‘call and response’ songs.

Light up cards

In computing, children made light up greetings cards using circuits.

Circuits and lighthouses

Children combined science and DT and made some working lighthouses using circuits. They worked in collaboration and planned, made and evaluated their lighthouses.

Visiting a Hindu Temple

Children had the opportunity to visit a Hindu Temple and learn about what it’s like to be a Hindu. They also made some drawing of some of the Hindu Gods.

We are Editors

In Computing, children have been learning about how present information digitally and collaboratively. They also learnt how to edit their own work, and the work of others.

Walthamstow Wetlands

Children went on a trip to learn about animals and their habitats in science. They explored the reservoirs and tried to find the animals and birds that live there. They also went bug hunting and pond dipping. Children had the opportunity to do some sketching and draw some still life.

Maths Mastery

In numeracy children have been using different strategies to solve subtraction calculations: subtraction using difference and subtraction by partitioning.

Computing

Children have been learning how to code and are able to: 

· make the superhero appear and disappear.

· Change the size of the superhero

· Debug a code.

They also learnt how to set a timer and to make a sound when there was a collision.

Children were able to make their own  stories using the skills they learnt.

 

Learning about why the Quran is important to Muslims in RE

Children learn about the importance of the Quran for Muslims. In Art they had a go at producing a watercolour painting and doing some Islamic calligraphy.

Autumn 1 WOW Day

On WOW day and children learnt a lot about Romans. They dressed up in togas and made a laurel wreath for their heads. They also made Roman coins by icing biscuits. Finally, children had a Roman banquet, eating food that Romans would eat, such as bread, honey, olives, cucumber, cheese and grapes.

Creating a google document

Children have been learning how to create a google document. They learned to to change the font, it’s size and colour. They also learnt to import pictures from the internet, resize them and position them on the document.

Learning about Judaism through Art

Children learnt about Judaism through the lens of the arts. Here they are using blending techniques to depict an image of ‘God is always present’. Some children drew and painted the menorah and learnt about why it’s special to Jews.

Making models of rivers

In Topic children are learning about rivers. They made some river models, painted them and labelled the different features of a river.

Visiting The Tate Modern

Children had an opportunity to visit the Tate. They took the opportunity to look at different pieces of art work displayed there and had the opportunity to make their own sketches in their sketchbooks. Some children even sketched the river from the Millennium Bridge.

How sound is created

In Science, children learnt all about how sound travels. They created a musical instrument in Design and Technology and also wrote an explanation text in Literacy to tell people how to play their instrument. A very wholesome piece of cross curricular learning.

Fractions, decimals and percentages

Children have been learning about the relationship between fractions, decimals and percentages. They were able to match values that are equal.

Making Lighthouses

Children have been learning about how to make circuits in science. They made circuits with a bulb, battery and wires. When connected correctly, the light bulb glows. In DT children have made lighthouses with working bulbs. They designed their lighthouses in groups and created them together and even added a circuit so the lighthouse would light up.

The Kingdom of Benin

Children have been learning about the Kingdom of Benin. They wrote a biography of Oba Eweka I and made a timelinefor the events.In addition to this, they made banners for an Ekesa ceremony and learned to play drums for the occasion. Year 4 had their Ekasa ceremony with drummers and a procession. The Oba then chose his Ekasa based on their dancing and their banners. Being chosen as Ekasa is a great honour!
