A journey through Year 1 at Berger
Autumn Term
Our children start KS1 in either Pine or Yew Class.
Autumn Term in Year 1 marks the end of their Early Years Foundation education and the move into more formal learning in the classrooms while still maintaining the Berger creative spirit. Their overarching enquiry questions are ‘Why do people need to play?’ and ‘What makes a person brave?’
The children will be writing their own narrative stories based on stories they’ve written. They’ll also write their own short poems and write pieces related to their science topic.
In Maths, pupils will look at counting forwards and backwards, they’ll compared numbers using words like ‘more than’ and ‘less than’ and they’ll focus on number facts up to 5.
Reading will continue to focus on building the children’s confidence in phonics and they will work in small groups practising sounds and blending simple digraphs such as gr- and sh-.
Science focuses on everyday materials and what properties they have. The children combine this new knowledge with their DT topics to make their own toys, what fun!
In PE the children will practice using their feet in different ways and in their gymnastics lessons they will train their balance and travel in different ways.
In children’s PSHE and P4C lessons the children will engage in discussions around the them of ‘Who am I?’ and explore what makes us unique and special.
Art lessons investigate and enjoy the works of a variety of artist such as Metisse, Agar and Himid.
Additionally the children will experience the great outdoors in their half termly forest school outings. They’ll also look at coding using bee-bots in computing lessons and all Year 1 children will start their free music lessons learning the Ukulele!
As part of their topic looking at toys children will also have an exciting trip to the V&A Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green.
Spring Term
Spring term continues building on the foundational knowledge gained in the Autumn. The overarching learning enquiry questions are ‘Why do some people want to play?’ and ‘What makes Hackney special?’
In Writing, children will continue looking at fun poems; this time with a focus on repetitive sounds. They also will create information posters about their local area- linking to their geography topic.
In Maths, children will start to look at simple addition and subtractions facts to 10. Such as 2 + 2 = ?. They’ll also use number lines to identify numbers up to 20.
Science in Spring term focuses on animals including humans and season changes, with lots of learning in the library garden looking at how our world changes throughout the year.
PE will focus on making different shapes with their bodies and also cricket skills and team games.
Art looks at and recreates work in the styles of Althea McNish and Yann Arthus-Bertrand.
Music lessons, in our brand new music room, will focus on rounds- and dance lessons in our bright and colourful studio will look at varying speed and trying to choreograph simple steps of our own.
Summer Term
Summer term is here! A busy term with fun days and exciting trips, not to mention the children’s first Sports Day in the incredible Copper Box arena. The overarching question to start this term is ‘Would you rather live in a hot or cold climate and why?’ The children also get to choose their last topic for themselves.
In writing, the children will be writing reports and information texts about living things. They also have a more creative chance to write a fairy tale of their own.
In maths, the children will move into the world of time and money, as well as solidifying their number knowledge and their mathematical vocabulary.
In science, the children will continue looking at animals but this time with a focus on the different types of habitats they live in as well as what we can do to help protect them.
PE this term focusses on athletics and fitness and gives the children a chance to get ready for their first sports day.
Artists Zarah Hussein and Pablo Picasso will be focusses on this term and children can also join in with the big draw. RE this term also focuses on religion through art. The children also get to visit an art gallery themselves.
In music the children focus on using their voices and singing and they’ll listen to music from around the world with a particular focus on music by black artists. They’ll also dance to these songs and try to think about how they can improve their movement skills.
