A journey through Year 4 at Berger
Autumn Term
Our children enter Year 4 in either Copper Beech or Hazel.
Autumn Term in Year 4 continues looking at the KS2 curriculum goals. Their overarching enquiry questions is ‘What can we learn from different people?”
The children will be writing narrative stories based on the myth of Saturn. They’ll be writing letters to Roman soldiers and writing reports on life in Ancient Rome.
In Maths, pupils will look at numbers up to 10,000 and they will be adding and subtracting larger numbers. They will make calculations up to 100 and will start using simple division facts. Their shape work will look at perimeter and they’ll continue practicing times tables ready for the times table check.
Reading will will include focus on DSR lessons analyzing texts and decoding different question types. They will also have time in the library to encourage reading for pleasure.
Science focuses on living things and their habitats. They’ll examine what makes a different habitat and looked at areas in the outside environment that could be suitable to live in.
In PE the children will practice their hockey and dodgeball skills. They’ll work in teams and have friendly competitions.
In children’s PSHE and P4C during the autumn we look at rights, the environment and online safety. They’ll look at the UK and its diversity.
Art lessons focus on the artists Robert Delauney and Romare Beaden, looking at their works and methods and emulating them in their own ways through collage .
In music the children will focus on graphic scores and the history of music; learning to use different types of notation. In dance they’ll create a variety of motifs using different stimuli.
Additionally the children will experience the great outdoors in their half termly forest school outings. They’ll also look at coding and online safety in computing.
Spring Term
Spring term learning is based around the overarching learning enquiry questions of ‘Is it better to attract or repel?’ and ‘How does Brazil effect the rest of the world?’
In Writing, children will write explanations texts about how machines and magnets move. They’ll write their own narrative tale based on Brazilian folk tales and write texts based on their class text ‘The Iron Giant.’
In Maths, children will continue to secure their mental calculations. They’ll look at simple angles within shapes, start to learn the formal column method and continue practicing some of their tables.
Science in Spring term focuses on forces and magnets, as well as plants. They’ll use their scientific skills to investigate forces and trying growing some seeds of their own.
PE will focus on volleyball and netball. The children will practice skills first and then get into small team matches where they can try different tactics.
Art looks at the the work of Jackson Pollock and Beatriz Milhazes. They’ll have the opportunity to use different textures and patterns and make their own printing blocks.
In children’s PSHE and P4C lessons the children will engage in discussions around the themes of relationships and differences.
Music lessons will focus on playing solo parts of different pieces of music. They will both compose and improvise different pieces. Dance lessons will continue expanding their dance vocabulary as they work their motifs into more complex routines.
Summer Term
Summer term is here! A busy term with fun days and exciting trips, not to mention Sports Day in the incredible Copper Box arena. The overarching question to start this term is ‘What makes volcanoes interesting?’ The children also get to choose their last topic for themselves.
In writing, the children will be writing poetry based on the eruption at Pompeii. They will also write their own creations based around the topic that they choose to cover.
In maths, the children will look at polygons and their sides. They’ll use simple column subtraction and start to look at numbers as fractions of wholes.
In science, the children will continue look at rocks and solids and how different materials are formed within the earth. They’ll have a chance to dig for these at Forest School.
PE this term focusses on athletics and also gives some time to practice for sports day. The children will also be looking at orienteering.
In Art the children will study Rachel Whitehead and Henry Moore. They’ll also choose some art to create based on their chosen topic.
In children’s PSHE and P4C lessons the children will engage in discussions around the themes of health and growin. They’ll discuss subjects like ‘How do the things we enjoy change as we grow up?’
In music the children focus on using their voices and singing games. They will learn a song and practise for the end of year school show. They’ll also dance to these songs and try to think about how they can improve their movement skills.
