A journey through Year 4 at Berger

Autumn Term

Our children enter Year 4 in either Copper Beech or Hazel.

Autumn Term in Year 4 continues looking at the KS2 curriculum goals. Their overarching enquiry questions is ‘What can we learn from different people?”

The children will be writing narrative stories based on the myth of Saturn. They’ll be writing letters to Roman soldiers and writing reports on life in Ancient Rome.

In Maths, pupils will look at numbers up to 10,000 and they will be adding and subtracting larger numbers. They will make calculations up to 100 and will start using simple division facts. Their shape work will look at perimeter and they’ll continue practicing times tables ready for the times table check.

Reading will will include focus on DSR lessons analyzing texts and decoding different question types. They will also have time in the library to encourage reading for pleasure.

Science focuses on living things and their habitats. They’ll examine what makes a different habitat and looked at areas in the outside environment that could be suitable to live in.

In PE the children will practice their hockey and dodgeball skills. They’ll work in teams and have friendly competitions.

In children’s PSHE and P4C during the autumn we look at rights, the environment and online safety. They’ll look at the UK and its diversity.

Art lessons focus on the artists Robert Delauney and Romare Beaden, looking at their works and methods and emulating them in their own ways through collage .

In music the children will focus on graphic scores and the history of music; learning to use different types of notation. In dance they’ll create a variety of motifs using different stimuli.

Additionally the children will experience the great outdoors in their half termly forest school outings. They’ll also look at coding and online safety in computing.


Spring Term

Spring term learning is based around the overarching learning enquiry questions of ‘How does the light bulb affect the world?’

In Writing, children will write recounts based on Eweka and the Kingdom of Benin and a linked historical narrative. They’ll also write a recount of the discovery of electricity as well as writing instruction texts about how to reach the Aquatics centre (where they will be walking for their swimming lessons.)

In Maths, children will study shape and area. They will secure their knowledge of how to multiple and divide decimals and will consider factors multiples and primes.

Science in Spring term focuses animals including humans and electricity. Their will also conduct experiments based on these areas of science.

PE will focus on gymnastics (where they will focus on rotation and movement) and the Swedish sport Tchoukball which focuses on teamwork, dynamic movements and tacts.

Art looks at the the work of Yinka Shonibare and William Grill. They’ll have the opportunity to make models using different materials and add details to surface drawings.

In children’s PSHE and P4C lessons the children will engage in discussions around the themes of resilience, healthy relationsips and focusing on making good choices.

Music lessons will focus on learning to play and perform in solo and ensemble contexts, using their voices and playing musical instruments with accuracy. Dance lessons will continue with learning to compose longer dance sequences in a small group. They’ll demonstrate precision and some control in response to stimuli.


Summer Term

Summer term is here! A busy term with fun days and exciting trips, not to mention Sports Day in the incredible Copper Box arena. The overarching question to start this term is ‘What is the sound of a place?’ and ‘What is a river’s story.’

In writing, the children will be writing persuasive texts encouraging someone to attend their Fiesta. They’ll also write instruction texts on how to make sounds with instruments. They’ll write a narrative based on ‘Where the river begins’ and create their own personification poems.

In maths, the children will look at fractions, time and symmetry. They’ll also continue to practice division methods and learning how to work with remainders.

In science, the children will study sound and how it travels and they’ll conduct experiments on how sound can be affected. They’ll also look at a deeper level into the states of matter.

PE this term focusses on athletics with a particular emphasis on field events. The children will also be looking at Tee Ball.

In Art the children will study William Morris. They’ll look at his use of pattern and colour and create their own inspired pieces using a variety of materials.

In children’s PSHE and P4C lessons the children will engage in discussions around the themes of health and growing. They’ll discuss subjects like ‘How do my choices influence my health?’

In music the children focus on Spanish music linking into their Fiesta learning. They will learn a song and practise for the end of year school show. They’ll also dance to these songs and try to think about how they can improve their movement skills.
