A journey through Year 6 at Berger

Autumn Term

Our children enter Year 6 in either Chestnut or Sycamore class.

Autumn Term in Year 6 continues looking at the KS2 curriculum goals and starts preparing children for their SATs exames. Their overarching enquiry question is ‘Why is there conflict in the world?’

The children will write a persuasive letter encouraging evacuation from the Blitz. They’ll write a narrative story based on the D-Day beach landings. They’ll also write a newspaper article about the fictional bombing of Berger Primary during WW2 and they’ll also write a diary entry from the perspective of someone alive during the war.

In Maths, pupils start the year consolidating their arithmetic knowledge in preparation for their end of year exams. They’ll start with a overview of number, place value and rounding skills; before moving on to more advanced calculation methods and the use of fractions.

Reading in Year 6 uses SFA, a reading scheme that uses exam style questions to analyse and discuss a different text each week. They’ll look at extracts from books such as The Midnight Fox, Five Children and It, Harry Potter and many more.

Science looks firstly at light, how is travels and how our eyes are able to process the information to send signals to the brain. Then they will move on to looking at electricity, what it is and how works and how it can be used safely.

In PE the children will practice their basketball and dodgeball skills. Always great fun and also fantastic for helping work as a team and in a competitive environment.

In children’s PSHE and P4C during the autumn we look at rights, and will consider the impacts of different community groups. They’ll look at online safety in areas such as fake news as well as the dangers of vapes.

Art lessons focus on different war artists, they’ll draw, use oil pastel and chalk, and analyse many different art pieces as well as trying to create their own in similar styles.

In music the children will study drum and bass music and the origins of EDM. They’ll also attend a ‘rave’ as part of their understanding of the scene.

Additionally the children will experience the great outdoors in their half termly forest school outings. They’ll also look at coding and online safety in computing.


Spring Term

Spring term learning is based around the overarching learning enquiry questions of ‘How does the past influence the future?’ and ‘Why do we have SATs?’

In Writing, children will be writing stories in the style of a Greek Myth. They’ll write a balanced argument about the difference of living in Sparta or Athens. In Spring 2 their writing lessons will take on a grammar focus a)to help underpin their writing knowledge and b) to help them prepare for their exames.

In Maths, children will continue working through the curriculum using reasoning skills to study angles, shape, measures, ratio and everything that may be needed for their upcoming exams.

Science in Spring looks at the human body and will explore the circulatory system and the respiratory system. They’ll also look at bloody and what is within it and how the different bodily systems work together to help us function. They’ll learn about exercise and how drugs affect our bodies.

PE will focus on gymnastics (where they will focus on flight) and they will also play badminton to practice their hand-eye co-ordination. .

Art looks at the the work of Greyson Perry and the children will study his style and method and try to make their own dyed clothes in the same style. They will then move on to studying graffiti artists from around the world from Banksy to Kashink.

In children’s PSHE and P4C lessons the children will engage in discussions around the themes of feelings and emotions, as well as valuing individual differences both in ourselves and in others.

Music lessons will focus on how technology has affected music. Children will use a variety of computer programmes to make their own music. Dance lessons will continue with learning to improvise with confidence, still demonstrating fluency across the sequence. They will ensure their actions fit the rhythm of the music


Summer Term

Summer term is here! A busy term with fun days and exciting trips, not to mention Sports Day in the incredible Copper Box arena. The overarching question to start this term is ‘Would you choose to live in the UK?’ and ‘How do harsh conditions affect things?’

In writing, the children will be writing information texts about an animal of their choice. They will finesse their writing as much as possible to assure they are covering the different genres and writing to an acceptable level.

In maths, the children will look at algebra and problem solving. They’ll apply their maths knowledge in a variety of contexts.

In science, the children will study evolution and different theories of how we have come to be here. They will also look at classification and how living things can be sorted by their characteristics.

PE this term focusses on athletics with a particular emphasis on field events. The children will also take part in a number of physical challenges whilst on their residential trip.

In Art the children will study Hokusai. They’ll also look at how art can be used as protest around the world for issues surrounding the ocean and environment etc.

In children’s PSHE and P4C lessons the children will engage in discussions around the themes of art as a coping mechanism for intense emotions.

In music the children will focus their end of year 6 performance. They will learn a song and practice for the end of year school show. They’ll also dance to these songs and try to think about how they can improve their movement skills.
