A journey through Year 5 at Berger
Autumn Term
Our children enter Year 5 in either Spruce or Birch class.
Autumn Term in Year 5 continues looking at the KS2 curriculum goals. Their overarching enquiry question is ‘What is the impact of immigration?’
The children will be writing newspaper reports about an Anglo-Saxon discovery. They’ll write poems in a number of styles. They’ll also write a report on different kinds of invaders and finally write a narrative story based on the Vikings.
In Maths, pupils will look at decimal fractions and understand how they can be equivalent. They’ll use their decimal knowledge to work with money problems. They’ll work across zero to understand negative numbers.
Reading will will include focus on DSR lessons analyzing texts and decoding different question types. They will also have time in the library to encourage reading for pleasure.
Science focuses on properties of different materials. They’ll investigate how different materials can be used in different ways and what their similarities and differences are.
In PE the children will practice their football and volleyball skills. They’ll work in teams and have friendly competitions.
In children’s PSHE and P4C during the autumn we look at rights, and will consider the impacts of different community groups. They’ll look at online safety in areas such as fake news as well as the dangers of vapes.
Art lessons focus on Celtic patterns and they’ll study different sculptures by a variety of artists as well as creating their own.
In music the children will study and have a strong understanding of the history of music. They’ll practice songs for our winter concert and play and perform in solo and ensemble contexts.
Additionally the children will experience the great outdoors in their half termly forest school outings. They’ll also look at coding and online safety in computing.
Spring Term
Spring term learning is based around the overarching learning enquiry questions of ‘How can people change the world?’ and ‘Would you like to go to space?’
In Writing, children will write balanced debates around whether protests are acceptable. They’ll write a biography of Nelson Mandela. They’ll create a science fiction narrative based on space and will also write an explanation text about how astronauts adapt to life in orbit.
In Maths, children will practicing multiplication and division (including with decimals.) They’ll use their knowledge of number/factors/multiples and primes in a variety of reasoning contexts.
Science in Spring looks at a variety of forces and will allow children to ask questions and experiment on them. They’ll also study the fascinating topic of space.
PE will focus on gymnastics (where they will focus on inversion and rolls) and they will practice skills relating to tennis and racket sports.
Art looks at the the work of Louise Bourgeois and will focus on textiles and creation. They will also look at an ensemble of Medu art and create their own pieces in a similar style.
In children’s PSHE and P4C lessons the children will engage in discussions around the themes of feelings and emotions, as well as valuing individual differences both in ourselves and in others.
Music lessons will focus on improvising and composing music for a range of purposes using the inter-related dimensions of music Dance lessons will continue with learning to improvise with confidence, still demonstrating fluency across the sequence. They will ensure their actions fit the rhythm of the music
Summer Term
Summer term is here! A busy term with fun days and exciting trips, not to mention Sports Day in the incredible Copper Box arena. The overarching question to start this term is ‘Would you choose to live in the UK?’ and ‘How do harsh conditions affect things?’
In writing, the children will be writing persuasive texts tourism in London. They’ll also write a diary based on ‘The London Eye Mysteries’. They’ll write a narrative based on ‘Holes’ and write a report about desert animals.
In maths, the children will at units and angles. They’ll learn to convert between different measures and practice using a protractor.
In science, the children will animals including humans and also living things in their habitats. They’ll look at the human body and its main systems.
PE this term focusses on athletics with a particular emphasis on track events. The children will also be looking at kwik cricket.
In Art the children will study Laura Knight and her paintings. They’ll also study Tony Cragg, a Sikh artist, and use his work to create their own inspiring pieces.
In children’s PSHE and P4C lessons the children will engage in discussions around the themes of art as a coping mechanism for intense emotions. They’ll discuss subjects like ‘What are my strengths?’
In music the children will focus on grime music and also focusing on Stormzy. They will learn a song and practice for the end of year school show. They’ll also dance to these songs and try to think about how they can improve their movement skills.
